Question from Ernstik 5 (12:08, 8 September 2024)

Hello, I am a musical artist and I want to create an article about myself. Is it possible? Thanks! --Ernstik 5 (talk) 12:08, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

@Ernstik 5 While its certainly not impossible, its very difficult. Its hard to write about yourself in a manner that is neutral, and not an advertisement, even for the best writers. Further, you might not qualify for an article. We only write about notable subjects, which usually requires someone to have received significant media coverage. Usually, if you're notable, someone else will write an article about you in time. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 02:20, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Freecranes on Supranet (01:43, 11 September 2024)

is the user page just a list of links? I'm in text editor trying to create user page for Freecranes...

i was distracted and attempting my first edit...

what am i doing? thanks beth --Freecranes (talk) 01:43, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

@Freecranes a user page can be whatever you want it to be! Within reason of course; it still has to relate to your function of being a Wikipedia editor. But folks put all sorts of different things on their pages. Mine has a mix of pictures, humourous quotes, practical tools, and more. Beyond that I guess I'm not exactly sure what you're asking? Can you help me narrow down your question? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:55, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Wikieduuser (03:03, 10 September 2024)

Hi how do I create pages? --Wikieduuser (talk) 03:03, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

@Wikieduuser It seems you figured out how to submit articles to the AFC queue, which is the first step. Now the issue you face though is that the subject is likely not notable, i.e. not well known enough to qualify for an article. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:06, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! I've made edits to include many more national-level media appearances and TV appearances. Is this good now Captain? Wikieduuser (talk) 01:09, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
@Wikieduuser Well the first issue is I don't think the Weixin citations will be appropriate. Social media is not generally allowed as a source except for very specific circumstances. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:52, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I will see how to find the same articles from elsewhere. Thank you. Wikieduuser (talk) 06:55, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you again for the reply. I have removed Wechat sources, and replaced them with official account of Shanghai Education Television Station's Program, and Sohu News. Does the Draft pass review now? Wikieduuser (talk) 13:21, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
@Wikieduuser I'm not going to review it for you; it'll get reviewed in the review queue in the normal course of events. I suspect you're going to have a hard time getting it approved though, because its hard to point to what this guy is actually...important for? Like, we aren't writing about many 21 year olds; they have to be pretty exceptional to warrant inclusion. He's a promising young man, but we don't write about folks just because they might be noteworthy at some point. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 04:34, 12 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from DZAugustus (17:03, 22 September 2024)

Is it possible to successfully combat, ie change, propaganda infos that are posted by dictatorship regimes? [Example Algerie] - Right at the beginning I ran into this definition "... a country in the "Maghreb region of north Africa." If you lookup WP regions, such region is not defined. The designation is a relative localisation ie in relation to the Middle-East (Asia Minor). Middle-Easteners a free to inform themselves as they wish, in their language(here Maghreb:West to Arabic speaking peoples), when location is a matter of geo-location ! Example: Can one locate India or Autralia or the USA as South, Est, West of UK? --DZAugustus (talk) 17:03, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

@DZAugustus We describe the subjects of articles according to how reliable sources define them. If you're looking for more information on the Maghreb, just follow that blue link. Otherwise, I guess I'm not quite sure what your concern is? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:31, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Bkonechny (05:42, 18 October 2024)

Hello, I just want to add some missing info and a band I was in BC. How do I go about submitted info? Thanks, Brian --Bkonechny (talk) 05:42, 18 October 2024 (UTC)

@Bkonechny Do you have a reliable source that supports the changes you want made? Like, a news article of some kind? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 04:05, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi, Yes, Have newspaper ads, promo posters etc. The band is on a list but all of the bands have a click link but Teaser does not. I was the band leader and thought it would be cool to add it. Now I just have to remember where I saw a list of bands from Vancouver BC. Getting old! BK Bkonechny (talk) 17:01, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bkonechny so the band doesn't currently have an article? If not, it might be difficult to get them a page unless it received more than just passing news coverage. Like, full length articles discussing the band, not just mentions or ads. What's the list that you're referring to? Could you link it? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:58, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
List of bands from British Columbia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bands_from_British_Columbia
If you scroll down to Vancouver, you will find my band name Teaser but no info linked to it.
It's the only band with no additional info. lol
Also, my drummer has a little info on his site that we could link to
https://johncodyonline.com/music/teaser/
Let me know what you think is the best way.
BK 64.234.113.36 (talk) 23:08, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bkonechny your drummer's own site can't be used as a source to establish notability. We don't write about everything, only those things which have received sufficient coverage in reliable, independent sources. Can you link me three newspaper articles that talk about your band at length? It's okay if they're from the 80s. This can get tricky because you might need to use a site like Newspapers.com. WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is   AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion,   BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place,   Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are:   Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points,   Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points,   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points,   Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and   AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Re:Arbcom/Serial Number 54129

I don’t mean to sound like I’m tatting or anything, but this user’s recent comments at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case don’t seem to be in line with the principle of “This page is for statements, not discussion.” I’ve also provided a number of diffs there showing this user has problems with incivility and hounding and is unwilling to seriously listen to anyone they disagree with. Normally I’d take this to ANI but I don’t want to stir up more dramah which is clearly what they want to happen by baiting me like this. I’m not sure if you can/want to do anything about this but as an arbitrator I thought you might be able to help. Dronebogus (talk) 16:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the ping regarding your litany of assumptions. Your participation at the case request is wholly unuseful. I say nothing as to your other activities, which are only relevant to the request itself. SerialNumber54129 16:11, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
@Dronebogus@Serial Number 54129 Serial, it's really not a great look to get pulled to my page and to then just continue to attack Dronebogus. I understand your criticism at the Marine 69-71 page. While I've never liked Commons' status as a wank bank, and agree that some of Dronebogus's contributions there are questionable, he does have some useful NSFW images. But that's not the point. The point is to focus on the content, not the contributor. Just because an editor has made content X does not mean they are disqualified from having an opinion on Y. The deeper issue here Serial, as revealed by the various diffs listed on the ARC, is that you've been making a lot of spicy comments directed at other editors as of late. Are you doing okay? I know it's a stressful time in the world, so I want to make sure you're taking care of yourself. I've always valued your counsel and have always been eager to see your name on a page, so this feels out of sorts. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 16:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
OK. I apologize to Dronebogus and will not refer to him as pornographer-in-chief any more (joke). More seriously, Dronebogus, I promise not to mention your Commons work, except at Commons. This means I have to attack the Cap'n even more assiduously than usual. Prepare to repel boarders. I will resign immediately. SerialNumber54129 16:52, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

Just a simple greeting from your mentee

Looked into it a bit and even though I'm still unsure why someone like me who doesn't contribute or edit pages would need a mentor (hope I didn't do something wrong haha), I still wanted to reach out and say hi and hope alls well with you! Obongo83 (talk) 09:30, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

You're all good. Usually folks make accounts so they can edit, and our software automatically pairs new users with established mentors in case the users end up with questions. Re: The Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation situation

Hi CaptainEek -- I'm concerned about your removal of the link to the The Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation situation discussion on WP:CENT. Whilst I was generally aware of the ongoing problem, I had not realised that there was serious consideration of the Foundation disclosing IPs and e-mail addresses to the Indian court, and I am genuinely appalled at this idea. Could you reconsider, in the light of the fact that the disclosure appears imminent, and once done is irrevocable? Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 03:42, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

Curiosity only, I promise I won't use the answer to attack ArbCom anymore (this week)

What is the actual criterion for "very clear consensus"? It's not unanimity, I assume. Could you provide numbers without violating any secret stuff? Not necessarily the numbers for the Bish vote, which I can see could be considered none of my business. But just, in general, how many no votes would it take to veto a choice? I'd ask at WT:ACN, except I sort of think that discussion may have nearly run its course. But if you think this is better answered there, that's fine with me. Floquenbeam (talk) 16:48, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

@Floquenbeam Can you clarify the broader sentence you're referring to? I wanna make sure we're on the same page about what part of the process. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 17:05, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
The one Kusma found at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Conflict of interest reports#Appointments: "The Committee carefully vets all applications with feedback from the functionaries team; very clear consensus from the Committee is needed for a candidate to be presented for consideration to the Community." Floquenbeam (talk) 17:28, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
Although it doesn't say it, i assume the same "very clear consensus" is needed at the actual final vote, too.... Floquenbeam (talk) 17:29, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam thank you, always good to have the citation just in case :) So the way we went about that this time was that we took a strawpoll among the Committee, to see if there were any candidates who obviously weren't going to pass the 70% threshold required at the end for ultimate appointment. We then advanced with the candidates who remained. As I elaborated at ACN, we apparently need to improve how that process works. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 17:51, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. That 70% threshold is what I was probably really after, I just didn't know enough to ask the right question. Perhaps it says it somewhere and I didn't notice. Also, I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, but: I agree the process could use some work (priority #1: tell candidates who don't pass why, right off the bat, don't make them ask), but my main ... annoyance, I suppose, is a good word? ... is that whoever voted "no" was just so obviously wrong this time. It increases my concern that when they're voting on people I don't know much about, they're making similar mistakes. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:03, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam I think we're very much on the same page there. With regards to 70%, I don't believe that number is explicitly on-wiki, but we did establish that the COIVRT queue needed a functionary-like appointment process, and the funcs need a supermajority (70%) to be appointed. Ergo, 70% for COIVRT, because it's handling NDA material. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:07, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Lincoln's assassination

Captain Eek, I like your addition of "dying the next day" in "Lincoln lived to see this victory but was shot by an assassin on April 14, dying the next day." But I like it because it informs readers that he died the next day, not for the reason you gave, which is "Just saying that he was shot isn't enough, we need to specify that he died. You can survive being shot." This is because the fact that he died was stated before you added "dying the next day." It was stated because the sentence says that he was "shot by an assassin." Had Lincoln survived, Booth would have been merely an attempted assassin. Please don't take this comment too seriously; I'm just having fun. Maurice Magnus (talk) 03:17, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Loracnedwab (04:59, 1 December 2024)

Hi Capt. I do genealogy. I have in my maternal side, Martha Augusta McLane b 28 Sept 1848 in Marion. married in Marion, 5 June 1865, Joseph B. Hall, my great-grandmother's 1st husband. I tried CoPilot and couldn't locate anything other than her birthdate and marriage date. Could you find her death date and place? --Loracnedwab (talk) 04:59, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

@Loracnedwab Hi. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. We're not Google, and we're not a research service. Thank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:

What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt Hi Gerda, sorry to hear about rough times for you; I hope the sun shines again on you soon. As to your question, we've talked about infoboxes before. I still stand by my 2022 response about the infobox wars. The interesting thing I note from that DYK is that all of the articles have an infobox, except for Mahler's, but Mahler is the only FA. Of course, Mahler is a 2010 vintage FA, from an era before the ubiquity of infoboxes. What does that tell me? I guess from this small sampling, it might be evidence that infoboxes have won the war on infoboxes. Much as drugs seem to have won the war on drugs, or poverty has won the war on poverty.... CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 01:12, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
Perhaps turn your attention to the talk pages, and tell me if you believe that the topic should still be treated as "contentious". (I asked in 2018, that's right.) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 01:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt Thank you for the direction :) Most of the articles don't have an issue. But I do admit some surprise at seeing just how recent and voluminous the infobox argument on Mahler's page is. However, from this small sampling, I'm not sure I could say authoritatively that infoboxes remain a problem. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 01:36, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
You might try the strength of arguments, how is that? I wanted to keep it simple, but if you don't see enough for Mahler try Mozart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

story · music · places
November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. Regarding my question, I found one so far who looked into the matter and didn't stay at the surface, Simonm223. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:58, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
Today's story comes from a DYK about a concert that fascinated me, and you can listen! For my taste, the hook has too little music - I miss the unusual scoring and a specific dedication - but it comes instead with a name good for viewcount. I'd still like to know what you think about the Copland posts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:53, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Today: listen to Sequenza XIV. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:27, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
Listen today to the (new) Perplexities after Escher. - Congratulations to being elected! Could you look at Samuel Barber and tell me if you miss something in his infobox? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:30, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antônio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:12, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
I come to fix the cellist's name, with a 10-years-old DYK and new pics - look for red birds --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:02, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Lyndis Parlour (17:19, 30 December 2024)

Hi CaptainEek, nice to meet you. I am not yet fluent in the editing practices here. Would it be better to provide reasons for reverting less constructive edits in the edit summary box? Is there anything else I need to consider when reverting? Thank you. --Lyndis Parlour (talk) 17:19, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

@Lyndis Parlour one should generally provide an WP:EDITSUMMARY, yes. Obvious nonsense (curse words, spam) can just be removed with a summary like "rvv" (meaning revert vandalism). But anything that could remotely be productive or in good faith should be reverted with a fuller explanation of why that edit is not an improvement. Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Please help. Thank you!

Seems like someone @prunfola made a Wikipedia page just to sabotage Li's page with a false edit. Li was elected Class President freshman year and re-elected every year after that. The first class president Ashton Miller flunked out of Princeton after the first semester, so there was another election to replace him — Li became class president FRESHMAN year. Can you please undo his edit?

He's clearly trying to diminish and downgrade her achievement. She was the first woman to serve as class president at Princeton all four years. Thank you so so much. Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 06:53, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Do you have a WP:RS that could be cited to prove that? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 07:07, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
Yes, I provided four reliable sources on the talk page and the editor reverted the initial incorrect edit. Many heartfelt thanks for your time and help :) Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 12:46, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

Lindy Li

Hi @CaptainEek, happy new year! Would it be possible to increase the level of protection for Li's page? Most of the vandals are confirmed longtime Wikipedia users, one of whom attacked her on X and Reddit. He was subsequently banned from Wikipedia for abusing his editing privileges. He continues to leave incendiary public comments about her on Facebook. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Wishing you a fantastic new year! Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 08:37, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

@Napoleonjosephine2020 You should not be stalking editor's Facebooks. That's not cool. At any rate, let's see if the current protection works before considering increasing it. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:53, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
He is posting incendiary comments on LINDY LI's page! No one is stalking anybody. Clearly, the current protection isn't working, given the onslaught of false edits today. Can you please increase it? Thank you. Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 19:13, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
Stalking editors on Facebook, X, and Reddit isn't cool, you're also showing signs of Wikipedia:Ownership of content. I suggest CaptainEek deny this user's request and for the user requesting to show civility. DACartman (talk) 19:24, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
The editor provided the social media links to me himself! That's why he got banned from Wikipedia! This is all well-documented. Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 19:30, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
Did he ask you to stalk his social media or click the links? By the way, only the community can Wikipedia:Banning policy people. The editor got blocked by a admin, blocking and banning are way different DACartman (talk) 19:37, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
@Napoleonjosephine2020 well that user is currently blocked, and even if he does get unblocked, I doubt he'll be allowed to directly edit Lindy Li's page either. So let's focus on the issues actually before us. Since I protected the page, have there been any edits that you find problematic? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:53, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
Yes, there were a number of new edits that are wrong and false. I listed only a few of them on Li's talk page so as not to overwhelm anyone. Thank you so much for your time and attention! Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 20:34, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
H sent me the links in a direct reply to me to prove that he only hated Li, but wasn't a racist. Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 20:32, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi @CaptainEek! Can you please change back Li's party affiliation or even better shut down her page to prevent disruptive editing? The latest false edit is that Li is a Republican. According to public records and her own statements, Li is still a registered Democrat. She just left the DNC. There is a difference.
An editor erroneously made the change and I am unable to revert it. At no point has Li said she is a Republican. Thanks so much! Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 11:27, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
For the record, this is mostly false. Napoleon all but accused me of racism for editing Li’s page, so I sent them a tweet in which I pushed back on someone claiming that she confirmed the “Asian traitor” stereotype, and noted that I myself was of Chinese descent. While I did express my opinion that Li was an “opportunistic grifter” in that tweet, it was secondary to the defense of her against a racist attack. I do not know how Napoleon was able to access my Reddit or Facebook comments, none of which I believe evince “hatred,” despite my complaints that someone who may have been Li seemed to be involved in COI editing of her own page. EncycloDeterminate (talk) 22:41, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
@EncycloDeterminate I understand that the Committee unblocked you without putting any restriction on you. But I believe that was in part because you expressed that you would leave well enough alone. I have already partial-blocked Napoleonjosephine from Lindy Li's page, and I will do it for you too if you become a problem. I expect both you and Napoleon to do your best to get along. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:01, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
I can quote from my email exchange with Cabayi, leeky, and the other committeemembers, but in short, I didn’t say I wouldn’t edit, only that I would be more careful when alleging COI edits by apparent IP sockpuppets. My latest edit of Li’s page was merely grammatical—I’ve left the more contentious edits to others—but I did want to write in my own defense here, given Napoleon’s misrepresentation of the dispute. EncycloDeterminate (talk) 23:07, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
@CaptainEek @EncycloDeterminate continues to stalk Lindy Li's page and make unfounded allegations on her talk page. Can you please block him from the page as you have me? He seems to have an unhealthy obsession with Li.
He's made a number of inflammatory comments on Li's Facebook page. He's since been banned from her page. He's also posted about her on Reddit and X (he shared the link with me). He is no neutral arbiter and publicly attacked her as an "opportunistic grifter." Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 06:30, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
@Napoleonjosephine2020 Frankly, you seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Li too, so that cuts both ways. For now, he's editing on the talk page, and he's not saying all that much anyway. If he starts editing the page itself in a problematic manner, then let me know. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 17:56, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi! Thank you for your reply :) The problematic difference is I've been blocked but he hasn't.
This man, whose identity he himself has self-disclosed on Li's Facebook page, admitted to being a progressive Kamala Harris supporter on Reddit and that he strongly dislikes Li. Not sure why someone who openly admits to loathing Li is allowed to sabotage her page like this, especially someone who has admitted across social media his clear animus of her and slammed her as an "opportunistic grifter".
This level of obsession with Li is deeply disturbing. Napoleonjosephine2020 (talk) 21:09, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
@Napoleonjosephine2020 But he isn't editing the article itself, just the talkpage. We do not typically block people for their off-wiki opinions. If he makes problematic edits, let me know. But otherwise, I suggest you lay off and focus on actually building an encyclopedia. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:31, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
You’ve repeated this talking point between five and six times already, while leaving out the fact that I linked it in a tweet that primarily defended Li against racist attacks while still saying that her behavior seemed obviously opportunistic (this was in response to Napoleon suggesting that I was targeting her for being Chinese, although the funny thing is, I’m Chinese myself). On her Twitter account, half of her replies are now from MAGA supporters pointing to her tweets from last year as evidence that she’s extremely untrustworthy. EncycloDeterminate (talk) 19:51, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

not helpful with holocaust, israel

i appreciate your work on articles not related to israel. but, your edits to holocaust are not so helpful any more, my friend. the super long lead section does not fit on my laptop screen any more, that is bad style. you just revert and restore original lenght, and seem to be so deep in the topic that you do not even bother doing proper links or help to "normal" editors on the talk page. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 19:55, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

@ThurnerRupert the lead on Holocaust is much shorter than the average lead. Compare with World War II or Gallic Wars. You also didn't make it much shorter at all, but removed mention of the Shoah, which is the other name folks would know it by. As to the last sentence of your message, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:31, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
you even seem to be so deep in that stuff, @CaptainEek, that you not even notice when it was too much. i find your comment "Restore long standing version of the lead; see talk archives explaining" as lazy. if you have no time, better not touch an article. otherwise give a proper reference please, which would allow even me to follow your thread of thought. my edit was -120 characters. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 18:38, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
@ThurnerRupert Revert summaries are often brief, as part of the WP:BRD cycle. The discussion isn't supposed to happen in the edit summaries, it's supposed to happen on the talk page. In this particular instance, the way the lead is presented has been discussed and nauseum in the past, which is why I pointed you to the talk page archives, so that we weren't unnecessarily rehashing a discussion. For starters, removing "Shoah" was not an improvement, because it is a name it is widely known by. Secondly, the article is purposefully structured as focusing on the genocide of Jews, and the other Nazi mass killings are covered on separate pages, which has been thoroughly discussed on the talk page before. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:18, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
where please? ThurnerRupert (talk) 21:56, 25 January 2025 (UTC) 21:55, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

How can I remove a "This section needs expansion", when that section of the article doesn't? --CelebrateCellary (talk) 04:16, 26 January 2025 (UTC)

@CelebrateCellary Can you give me an example of what you're looking at? Like, link me to a page and point out the section? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:45, 26 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Ebrahim1367 (01:21, 29 January 2025)

Hi there thanks for responding to be honest I'm a bit confused here it's means I don't know really what should I do and how can I edit my IP ADDRESS BLOCKED? --Ebrahim1367 (talk) 01:21, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

@Ebrahim1367 For one reason or another, it means you IP address (the way you connect to the internet) is blocked from editing. It probably isn't targeted at you, but rather someone else, and has caught you by accident. However, you seem to be able to edit, seeing as you've posted here, so unless it prevents you from actually editing I wouldn't worry about it. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:06, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi there thank you so much for responding but i don't know really what should i do and my English is not very good can you please help me to solve this problem thanks? Ebrahim1367 (talk) 14:50, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
@Ebrahim1367 You'll need to explain your problem better in the first place. If English is not your first language, Wikipedia exists in many other languages, which you can go find. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:18, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

IP disruptive

Hola captain, can you please look after this IP 200.8.116.209. They continuously removing redirect and making article on specific field.––kemel49(connect)(contri) 19:28, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

@KEmel49 continuously is a bit of a stretch. They turned two redirects into articles, which you then deleted without an appropriate explanation. You then gave them the "malicious redirect" warning, which was entirely inappropriate. Please don't WP:BITE the newbies. They were obviously a good faith contributor who just doesn't understand our byzantine rules. The right thing to do, instead of templating them, would be to have given them a nice explanation of how they could make those articles correctly. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:42, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
Hello Captain, I only remember you when i see something out of my range (hope that doesn't bother you too much 🙏🏻), An IP continued to edit Pope Gregory XIII, their edit were reverted but they didn't stop. They were warned on their talk page. Can you protect that page or block that IP please (The ball is on your court).Thanking––kemel49(connect)(contri) 18:10, 2 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from AardvarkZebedee (20:10, 9 February 2025)

Am I able to publish an article now? If not, what further steps do I have to take? --AardvarkZebedee (talk) 20:10, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

@AardvarkZebedee What are you looking to make an article about? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:16, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
The people v Daniel Perry. AardvarkZebedee (talk) 20:21, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
@AardvarkZebedee That article already exists as Murder of Garrett Foster. However, that article is extended confirmed protected due to persistent disruption, meaning that only accounts with more than 500 edits and 30 days of tenure can edit it directly. However, you're welcome to suggest additions to the article on its talk page. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:39, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
Would I be able to write a similar article on the matter? AardvarkZebedee (talk) 20:52, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
@AardvarkZebedee Well, probably not. We typically only allow one article about a particular subject, because having more than one article per subject could be a Wikipedia:POVFORK. Is there something you think the current article is missing/not covering right? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:07, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
Would I be able to write about when Daniel Perry got hired by Andreessen Horowitz? AardvarkZebedee (talk) 21:09, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
@AardvarkZebedee Oh, you mean Daniel Penny, not Daniel Perry. An odd coincidence that both would have been charged with murder. As it happens, Daniel Penny's article already mentions his employment with Andreessen Horowitz. But the article itself unprotected, so you're able to make edits, so long as they conform to our policies, such as providing a Wikipedia:Reliable source for all claims made about living people. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:22, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
Yes my apologies. What are the odds of that haha! Okay, thank you so much for your help. AardvarkZebedee (talk) 21:26, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

Hello, help me --PanjabiWikipedian (talk) 15:20, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

@PanjabiWikipedian so the reason your edits got removed is that we tend not to take the stance that governments take. So even if Pakistan says that Saraiki isn't a language spoken by Pakistanis, other sources still make that distinction. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:18, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from Sungaisekudai1?! on Kintetsu 7020 series (00:44, 19 February 2025)

Hello, Can I use Locomotive Wiki as a source for this page? It corroborates the minimal information on the Wikipedia page and provides other details not mentioned here. If so, how do I create the citation?

https://locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Kintetsu_7020_series --Sungaisekudai1?! (talk) 00:44, 19 February 2025 (UTC)
@Sungaisekudai1?! Unfortunately, no. Per WP:UGC, Wikis are not generally citeable here. Now, if the Wiki page had cited to a Wikipedia:Reliable source, then you could cite the reliable source itself. But since the Wiki you've linked has no citations, its not of much use. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:58, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Hi - I edited a company page and someone took it down immediately saying I didn't cite a source. I don't underfstand? I inlcuded all kinds of links to source. --Kidoz Prado (talk) 20:43, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

@Kidoz Prado I don't see any links in the edit you made? At any rate, that kind of edit isn't going to fly anyway because it is shameless PROMO (promotional) content. Wikipedia is not an advertising website, and attempts to put ad copy on our articles are poorly received. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:48, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from Qxc86 (19:27, 21 February 2025)

Hello!

I joined to ask some questions about the Compact Disc Digital Audio page, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Compact_Disc_Digital_Audio#Progression_in_the_maximum_duration_of_released_audio_CDs

The short version is, it looks like there were some incorrect/fake/vandal edits and I want a sanity check before just ripping them out. I don't know what the process is but figured I'd actually ask first. --Qxc86 (talk) 19:27, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

@Qxc86 Well even if they aren't vandalism, you can still undo them because whoever added that information didn't provide a reliable source, especially given that you couldn't verify the information. So feel free to revert things to the way they were. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:37, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
Thank you!
Is there any difference between manually entering four tildes and letting the automatic signature sign the post? Qxc86 (talk) 19:58, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
@Qxc86 Well it depends on what you're using. If you use the built in reply tool, no difference. If however you don't use the tool, a bot or another editor might sign for you, which can be awkward. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:59, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
